The Technoskeptic is taking the day off as America turns 242 years old. The fourth of July is often about backyard parties and fireworks—nothing wrong with that. But at a time when pessimism abounds, it also bears remembering the importance and power of civic engagement. Liberty was never truly won on the battlefield, but in the creation and defense of our founding documents and institutions. Generations of people have endeavored to secure those highest democratic ideals through voting, public service, advocacy, jury duty, volunteering, journalism, becoming officers of the law, showing up at city council meetings, signing petitions, or demonstrating. Passionate people organizing, speaking up, and taking action—sometimes at great personal risk—is the story of social change and also the story of America. Let us hope that we each find the courage and care within ourselves to show up and participate, in whatever way best expresses our unique gifts. Enjoy your holiday.
