Disney Fox Merger

Disney Buys Fox to Create Media Monolith

In a continuation of the trend of mega-mergers and ever-larger corporate entities, Disney agreed to buy 21st Century Fox for $52.4 billion. Fox will spin off its broadcast network and Fox News into an independent company, but Disney will acquire the film and television studios, National Geographic, Europe’s Sky Media, and Fox’s stake in Hulu, among other properties. However, the merger will still need regulatory approval. With the recent Justice Department intervention into a proposed AT&T–Time Warner union, perhaps—hopefully—Disney will confront a rising anti-trust tide. —ML
