Report to FAA Sets Framework For Delivery Drones

The FAA is set to draw up regulations regarding the identification of drones, after receiving a report from the Drone Advisory Committee. Such regulations are necessary before the types of unmanned package delivery promised by Amazon and others are feasible. However, questions remain about the committee’s impartiality. The Washington Post noted in November that the panel has operated in secrecy and has been criticized for mismanagement. A glance at the roster shows only three of the 36 members are from local government, including San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee, who has been a critic. Eight members are drone manufacturers, six are in drone-related industries, and nine are in traditional aviation-related fields. —ML
