Facebook Takes More Steps to Reduce Spread of “Fake News”

In the wake of the 2016 Presidential election, which saw such disturbing fabrications as Pizza-gate, Facebook finally started working with fact-checkers at Snopes and the Associated Press to debunk some of the falsified stories shared on the social network. Additionally, they will take steps to de-monetize sites that use Facebook to spread deliberately falsified stories. Once fact checkers mark a story “disputed,” the link to that story will no longer be promoted via Facebook advertising. Online pages that regularly post fake news to Facebook will be barred from using Facebook ads for any of the content they post—not just specific stories—a measure aimed at reducing the use of Facebook advertising to grow the readership of shady fringe news sites. —AK
