France to End Sale of Gasoline-Powered Cars after 2040

France’s new Ecology Minister Nicolas Hulot has announced that gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles will be phased out by the year 2040. The ban is intended to help France meet its commitments under the Paris Climate Agreement, which is strongly supported by the new French President Emmanuel Macron. It will also help the country alleviate air pollution problems resulting from increased use of diesel-powered vehicles. In the wake of the announcement, the Sierra Club issued a statement saying “World leaders like Macron are taking the high road, knowing that clean energy is not only the economic choice, it’s the responsible choice for communities and the environment. US policy makers should follow France’s lead so that we reach the end of the road for dirty transportation.” —TV
