London Nixes Uber’s Operating License

More bad news has surfaced for tech darling Uber: the company’s operating license in London won’t be renewed. Regulators cited serious unresolved public safety and security issues and a “lack of corporate responsibility” as the basis of the decision, which will affect 3.5 million passengers and 40,000 drivers. These issues included the company’s approach to reporting serious criminal offenses, the way it conducts background checks on drivers, and the use of software that could ‘‘prevent officials from undertaking regulatory or law enforcement duties.’’ Uber was first licensed to begin operating in the city in 2012 and plans to appeal the decision, which went into effect at the end of September. —TV
