Mexico Using Israeli Spyware on Journalists and Activists

Citizen Lab, an interdisciplinary lab at the University of Toronto’s Munk School of Global Affairs, just issued a report demonstrating that the Mexican government used spyware licensed from the Israeli firm NSO to spy on human rights lawyers, journalists, and even a child. That occurred even though Mexico pledged to use it only to seek out criminals and terrorists. The software was used to send messages that appeared to originate from the US Embassy in Mexico, to issue fake Amber alerts, and to spy on journalists investigating presidential corruption in Mexico. The report provides the latest evidence that countries that purchase spyware-for-hire frequently misuse it. —AK
