Robocops Jump from Dystopian Sci-fi Movies to Reality

Controlling the populace just took a giant leap forward. Real-life robocops are now on duty patrolling public streets in Dubai, as Newsweek reports. The robot officers, designed with help from Google and IBM, can scan faces from 100 feet away. Citizens can pay for traffic violations and report crimes using a touchscreen. An official statement says that the emirate is planning to make one quarter of its police force robotic by the year 2030. “With an aim to assist and help people in the malls or on the streets, the robocop is the latest smart addition to the force and has been designed to help us fight crime, keep the city safe and improve happiness levels,” said Brigadier-General Khalid Nasser Al Razzouqi, director-general of Smart Services at Dubai Police. —TV
