Two Criminal Probes of Uber Launched

The US Department of Justice just announced a preliminary investigation of ride-hailing service Uber for so-called Greyball software used to evade local regulators. The software compared the identity of ride requesters against financial institutions and social media accounts used by local police, denying the requesters rides and showing them bogus data in an attempt to evade local regulators before Uber’s service was approved in various locations. Uber stoped the use of Greyball after the New York Times reported on its existence in March. A grand jury in North Carolina has also issued a subpoena for Uber’s use of Greyball. —AK
